After spending nearly a decade driving a 2003 PT Cruiser, I finally upgraded to a 2022 Hyundai Tucson. Transitioning to a modern vehicle brought a wealth of new technology, including the incredibly useful Android Auto. When you first set up Android Auto, the bottom bar functions as a taskbar for your apps. While switching between apps is convenient, there's a more efficient way to use this feature. On your Android device, go to the Settings app, tap the search icon, and type 'Android Auto' to access its settings. Navigate to the Display section, and enable the Taskbar widgets option.
This small adjustment transforms the taskbar into a set of miniature widgets that provide quick access to relevant controls. For instance, if you're playing music while using Google Maps, you'll see a mini music player for easy playback without switching back and forth between apps. This multitasking feature has quickly become a favorite of mine.
Customizing the Android Auto Launcher
While the Android Auto launcher may not offer as much flexibility as your smartphone's home screen, it does allow some level of customization. In the same settings section, scroll down to find the Customize launcher option. Here, you can rearrange the order of your apps or even hide those you rarely use.
This simple customization can streamline your experience and make it easier to find the apps you need while driving. Although it might not be groundbreaking, it adds a personal touch to your setup.
Adjusting Media and Navigation Layout
Many users typically run both navigation and media playback during their drives. By default, Android Auto positions the navigation app on the left and the media app on the right. However, this layout might be inconvenient if your car has a larger screen, making it difficult to reach the media controls.
To adjust this, return to the Android Auto settings on your phone, scroll to the Advanced section, and select Change layout. Here, you can choose to place the Media closer to the driver, swapping the positions of the navigation and media apps. This simple tweak can enhance your accessibility while driving.
Controlling Music Startup Behavior
Another aspect worth mentioning is Android Auto's default setting to automatically play the last media source once you start your car. While this feature can be handy, there are times when you might prefer to select your music manually.
To turn off this automatic playback, go to the Startup section within the Android Auto settings on your phone and disable the Start music automatically toggle. This way, you won’t be startled by unexpected tunes when you get in your vehicle.
Leveraging Gemini Actions for Convenience
For those who enjoy the capabilities of Gemini, there’s a smart way to utilize it while driving. From the Customize launcher page, you can add shortcuts for Gemini actions. By typing in specific commands, you can create multi-step actions that execute several tasks at once.
For example, I created an action called ‘Driving home,’ which starts navigation, adjusts the AC, turns on the lights at home, and plays one of my favorite playlists—all with a single command. Arranging these actions alongside your apps can make your driving experience much more seamless.
