Google has announced a range of five new features aimed at improving the accessibility of Android devices for users. Notably, one of these features is designed to alleviate the effects of motion sickness, particularly when using smartphones in moving vehicles.
Innovative Motion Assist Feature
The standout addition is the 'Motion Assist' feature, which is tailored for users who experience travel sickness while using their phones. This functionality will be part of the Android Drop scheduled for September 2026. Unlike a Pixel Drop, this update will be available on a wider array of devices beyond just Google Pixel phones.
Motion Assist works by overlaying a series of small circles on the screen that move in sync with the vehicle's motion. This aims to reduce the disconnect between what users see on their screens and what they physically feel. Users can customize this feature to activate automatically, add it to the Quick Settings panel, and adjust the shape, color, and transparency of the overlay. It will be accessible for devices running Android 17.
Guided Vision for Enhanced Accessibility
Google is also introducing 'Guided Vision', a feature aimed at assisting visually impaired users. This tool combines the smartphone's camera with Gemini Live to help users read small text on food labels, view menus in dimly lit restaurants, or identify objects in their homes.
Guided Vision not only helps with reading but also provides auditory guidance to users, directing them on how to adjust their phone's position for better focus. This feature will be available on devices running Android 9 and above in regions where Gemini is accessible.
Find Hub Integration for Enhanced Organization
Another exciting update focuses on helping users remember where they placed important items. This new feature merges the Find Hub application with Gemini, allowing users to inform Gemini about the locations of their belongings.
For instance, a user can indicate that their passport is stored in a bedroom drawer, and Gemini will retain this information in Find Hub. Users can even attach photos to assist in identifying items later on. When they need to locate something, they can simply ask Gemini or check the 'remembered items' tab within Find Hub. This feature will be available for devices running Android 16 and above in regions where both Gemini and Find Hub are supported.
Enhanced Messaging Features
Additionally, Google is integrating Google Keep with Google Messages. This allows users to share and edit important information, such as to-do lists and shopping lists, directly from their chat conversations into Keep.
Google Messages will also offer expanded personalization options, letting users customize individual chat appearances with backgrounds, photos, and colors. Text bubbles on the screen will automatically adapt to match the chosen background, providing a more personalized messaging experience.
