For many years, I have been a dedicated Spotify user, enjoying its seamless functionality across Android and iOS. The variety of music available and features like Jam and Spotify Connect have provided a smooth listening experience at home. However, a recent change in my subscription plan has prompted me to consider alternatives.
Subscription Changes Sparked a Shift
In November 2025, Spotify discontinued the Duo plan in India, but I was fortunate enough to continue using it until I received an email in July 2026, indicating that my plan had been canceled due to a payment issue. With no changes to my payment method, I suspected Spotify was nudging me to upgrade to a pricier plan. Frustrated, I decided it was time to explore other music streaming options.
Discovering YouTube Music
Although I had previously tried Apple Music and Amazon Music, I had never given YouTube Music a chance until now. Taking advantage of a three-month trial with YouTube Premium, which includes YouTube Music, I figured I had nothing to lose. Just a few weeks in, I found several features that caught my attention.
A Fresh User Experience
The YouTube Music app is slowly winning me over, even though transitioning from Spotify has been challenging. Spotify's AI-driven recommendations never significantly influenced my listening habits, so I don’t miss them much. YouTube Music also provides solid recommendations tailored to my preferences.
One standout feature is the 'mood' row on the homepage, allowing me to filter music based on how I feel, whether I'm working out, commuting, or relaxing at home. Tapping on a mood bubble filters songs from various genres that suit my current vibe. Additionally, the Samples tab enables me to browse through song clips, enhancing my music discovery experience.
Unique Features and Community Engagement
Another thoughtful feature allows users to share songs from specific timestamps, which is perfect for sharing memorable moments with friends. Since I consume YouTube content regularly, YouTube Premium is proving to be a great value, especially after experiencing ad-free content.
Comparatively, many YouTube Music plans are cheaper than Spotify in the U.S., and opting for the YouTube Premium bundle adds only a few dollars to my monthly bill. This is also true in India, where getting both ad-free music and videos feels like a worthwhile investment.
While Spotify can switch to music videos, it doesn’t offer the extensive library that YouTube Music has. I find myself rediscovering classic performances and unofficial song mixes unique to YouTube Music, which adds to my overall enjoyment.
Unmet Expectations and Future Considerations
Despite my positive experiences, I’ve noticed some quality-of-life features missing on YouTube Music. For instance, I can’t cast music directly to my Amazon Echo or Sonos speakers as easily as I could with Spotify. Although I can use the Sonos app for YouTube Music, the interface is not user-friendly.
Another feature I miss is Spotify's Jam, which allowed users to collaborate on playlists during road trips. While this isn’t a deal-breaker, it is a feature I would appreciate having. For now, I'm committed to giving YouTube Music a fair trial period.
Although Spotify offers higher-quality audio streaming, I haven’t noticed a significant difference for casual listening in my car or with my wireless earbuds. However, Google has some improvements to make if YouTube Music is to compete effectively with Spotify in the future, including better podcast segmentation and enhanced audio quality.
Ultimately, my decision on whether to stick with YouTube Music remains uncertain, but I have no intention of letting go of my YouTube Premium subscription.
