The Apple Upgrade program operates similarly to a vehicle financing scheme, allowing users to either complete their purchase, pay early, or upgrade to the next generation of devices. This launch comes shortly after Apple raised prices on some of its MacBook and iPad models due to global memory shortages and storage availability issues.
Current Pricing and Options
At present, the pricing for the iPhone lineup remains stable. However, Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted last month that this situation may not last, leading to speculation that the upcoming iPhone 18 series could be priced higher than expected at its launch later this year.
The leasing options offered through Apple Upgrade are quite appealing, with monthly rental rates starting at just $17.99 for the iPhone 17e, $11.99 for the Apple Watch Series 11, and $24.99 for the MacBook Air. The rental contracts for the iPhone and Apple Watch are set at 24 months, while Mac and iPad devices can be leased for 36 months.
Flexibility at the End of the Lease
After the rental period concludes, customers are given several options. They can choose to upgrade to the latest model, make a one-time payment to purchase the device outright, or return the device and exit the program altogether. This flexibility is designed to cater to differing consumer needs and preferences.
Transition from iPhone Upgrade Program
The launch of Apple Upgrade replaces the previous iPhone Upgrade Program that was introduced in 2015, which is no longer accepting new registrations. One notable difference is that the new program has a broader range of devices available, though it does not include an extended AppleCare warranty as a standard feature, especially following recent price increases for that service.
It's important to note that customers should avoid missing their monthly payments. Recent findings in a beta version of iOS indicate that Apple is preparing to implement a feature that could lock access to apps on an iPhone if payment delinquencies are detected.
