Apple Launches Upgrade Program to Rent Devices Monthly

Apple has officially launched its new program, Apple Upgrade, which enables customers to rent a variety of devices including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches for a monthly fee. Previously hinted at by Bloomberg in late June 2026, this initiative is the result of a collaboration between Apple and the payment service provider Klarna.

Affordable Monthly Rental Options

With the Apple Upgrade program, customers can choose to rent devices starting at $17.99 per month for an iPhone, $11.99 for an Apple Watch or iPad, and $24.99 for a Mac. The program offers various rental durations, ranging from 12 months to 36 months, depending on the device.

Device-specific Rental Terms

For instance, if you opt for the iPhone 17 Pro with 256 GB of storage, the rental rate is $31.99 per month for a 24-month contract. Alternatively, a 12-month rental would cost $45.99. Similarly, the MacBook Pro 14-inch with 16 GB of RAM can be rented for $38.99 per month over a 36-month period.

Options After Rental Period

Once the rental period concludes, customers have three options: return the device and end the contract, exchange it for a newer model under a new contract, or pay off the remaining value to own the device outright. If customers choose to purchase the device, they only need to cover the difference between the device's price and total rental payments made. Apple has confirmed that there are no additional fees from Klarna, aside from applicable taxes.

Easy Returns and Trade-In Options

Apple is also providing customers with prepaid shipping boxes for those wishing to return or exchange devices, similar to its existing trade-in service. The Apple Upgrade program is accessible through the Apple online store, the Apple Store app, and physical Apple locations, although it is currently limited to users in the United States.

Additionally, Apple offers a trade-in option that can reduce monthly costs, as the trade-in value from an old device will be credited monthly to the new rental fee. Customers interested in the Apple Upgrade program must meet specific requirements, such as activating the device with a postpaid plan from carriers like AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile.
