Atari Partners with Universal Pictures for Game Adaptation Films

Atari is embarking on an exciting journey by signing a partnership with Universal Pictures to adapt ten of its legendary games into films. This collaboration has generated considerable buzz, particularly with Universal reportedly acquiring the rights to the first project from this agreement.

The Legacy of Atari

For over fifty years, Atari has played a significant role in shaping the gaming landscape. The company has created games and universes that continue to resonate within popular culture, long after their initial release. Wade Rosen, CEO of Atari, expressed enthusiasm about this partnership, stating, "We are thrilled to collaborate with Universal and Entertainment 360 to bring the spirit of our iconic brand and games to new media."

Iconic Titles in the Works

The ten games selected for adaptation include classics that many seasoned gamers will recognize, such as Asteroids, Adventure, Berzerk, Breakout, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Millipede, Missile Command, Pong, and Yar's Revenge. However, details regarding which game will be the first to make its cinematic debut remain undisclosed.

Creative Vision Behind the Adaptation

The inception of this collaboration stems from an original script written by Matt Reilly, an executive at Universal, alongside Carl Hampe, a producer known for his work on Hellboy. Guymon Casady, charged with overseeing the initial project, reminisced about growing up playing the Atari 2600 and maintaining a passion for these games. He remarked, "The best Atari games immerse you in a world, allowing your imagination to take over. Carl and Matt recognized the opportunity to capture that same spirit and develop a grand adventure around it."

The Growing Trend of Game Adaptations

This partnership marks a significant moment as it aligns with the broader trend of Hollywood's growing interest in video game adaptations. Mattson Tomlin, a writer for The Batman 2, has noted that the industry is shifting its focus from superhero comic adaptations. If his observations hold true, audiences can expect a surge in game-based films in the near future. This year alone, several films based on popular games, such as Resident Evil and Street Fighter, are set to release.

Over the past few years, game adaptations have started to make a notable impact at the box office. The Super Mario film franchise has proven particularly successful, grossing over USD 1 billion. Additionally, the Minecraft Movie generated more than USD 900 million upon its release in 2025, showcasing the lucrative potential of this genre.
