Atari Partners with Universal Pictures for Iconic Game Films

Atari has entered into an exciting partnership with Universal Pictures to adapt ten of its classic games into feature films. This collaboration marks a significant development in the gaming industry, as it highlights the growing trend of video game adaptations in Hollywood.

Reviving Iconic Games

With a legacy spanning over 50 years, Atari has created numerous games that have become etched in popular culture. Wade Rosen, the CEO of Atari, expressed enthusiasm about this venture, stating that the collaboration aims to bring the essence of their beloved games to new media. The ten games selected for adaptation include titles that many gamers fondly remember, such as Asteroids, Adventure, Berzerk, Breakout, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Millipede, Missile Command, Pong, and Yar's Revenge.

Behind the Scenes of the Adaptation

The impetus for this collaboration stems from an original script written by Matt Reilly, an executive at Universal, along with producer Carl Hampe, known for his work on Hellboy. Guymon Casady, who has been entrusted with overseeing the first project, shared that both he and Reilly grew up playing Atari 2600 games and continue to be fans today. They aim to capture the spirit of the original games, crafting a large-scale adventure that resonates with audiences.

The Growing Trend of Game Adaptations

This partnership between Atari and Universal Pictures is a reflection of a broader trend within the film industry. Recently, Hollywood has shown a keen interest in adapting video games into movies, moving away from its previous focus on superhero comic book adaptations. Mattson Tomlin, a writer for The Batman 2, noted that there is a shift occurring, indicating that we may see an increase in films based on video games in the future.

Success of Game-Based Films

In recent years, game adaptations have started to capture significant box office success. For instance, the Super Mario film grossed over USD 1 billion, while the Minecraft Movie earned more than USD 900 million upon its release in 2025. These successes demonstrate that audiences are eager to engage with stories from their favorite games on the big screen.

As Atari and Universal embark on this new journey together, fans can anticipate exciting adaptations that honor the original games while bringing fresh narratives to life. As the production progresses, it will be interesting to see which game will be the first to make its cinematic debut.
