Reintroduction of Human Employees

Leading American automotive company Ford recently announced its decision to rehire hundreds of human employees after realizing that relying on artificial intelligence (AI) did not deliver the expected results. In this move, Ford is recruiting as many as 350 new engineers, some of whom are former employees as well as former workers from the company’s suppliers.

Mistakes in Relying on AI

Charles Poon, Ford's Vice President of Hardware Engineering, revealed that the company made a major mistake believing that simply introducing AI and inputting existing design requirements would produce high-quality products. "We were mistaken," he explained. Poon emphasized that the results from the automated quality system they relied on were disappointing, prompting them to seek human expertise again to trace issues before products reach the factory floor.

The Importance of Employees in the Production Process

Ford is not completely abandoning the use of AI. Instead, they plan to use the newly hired employees to train the younger generation of workers and reprogram AI-based tools. This approach is considered more beneficial than handing over the entire process to technology. Ford CEO Jim Farley revealed that by relying on former employees, the company managed to reduce warranty costs and product recall rates. This demonstrates that human presence in the production process contributes significantly to cost savings, which can reach hundreds of millions of dollars.

Industry Trends

Ford’s decision to rehire human employees reflects a trend also experienced by other companies, such as Klarna, a Swedish fintech company. Klarna previously cut 1,200 jobs due to overreliance on AI. However, in 2025, they began reopening job vacancies after realizing that AI usage did not yield the expected results. Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski admitted that although AI can improve efficiency, these benefits were insufficient to enhance productivity and service quality.

Conclusion

The rehiring of human employees by Ford and Klarna shows that while AI technology offers many advantages, excessive dependence on it can backfire. Companies must find the right balance between leveraging technology and relying on human expertise to achieve optimal results. Amid rapid technological developments, human experience and knowledge remain irreplaceable.
