On October 6, 2026, reports emerged that Google may soon phase out the Safety Signal feature for its Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 LTE variants. This service, part of the Google Health Premium subscription, is designed to maintain critical safety features even when the watch is not connected to a cellular network.
Understanding Safety Signal
Safety Signal provides essential connectivity for emergency services when the watch is away from the paired phone and lacks an active carrier plan. This feature enables users to make emergency calls, utilize Safety Check, share emergency information, trigger Emergency SOS, and activate Fall Detection.
Discontinuation of Safety Signal
Recent updates to the Google Pixel Watch app (version 5.1.0.990450614) have revealed code indicating that the Safety Signal feature is slated for discontinuation. However, Google has not specified an exact date for when this service will cease to function.
Current Availability and Impact
Currently, Safety Signal is operational in select regions, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany. For owners of the Pixel Watch 2 and 3 LTE, this feature has allowed connectivity without the need for a separate carrier plan. The anticipated change will compel users who depend on Safety Signal to pursue alternative connectivity solutions.
Future Plans from Google
As of now, it remains uncertain whether Google intends to introduce a replacement for Safety Signal or if this feature will be permanently removed. The recent code updates have only confirmed the discontinuation of Safety Signal without any indication of an alternative service being announced.
For users relying on this feature for emergency situations, the upcoming changes could significantly impact their safety and connectivity. As we await further clarification from Google, it is advisable for users to consider their options and prepare for this potential adjustment.
