Google Home Speaker: A Promising Start with Some Notes
Although not officially launched yet, a lucky buyer managed to get the Google Home Speaker early. A Reddit user reported finding the device on Walmart shelves during a business trip. Surprisingly, the store staff accidentally sold the device even though it was not scheduled for release.
Interesting Unboxing and Surprising Findings
The Reddit user shared their initial impressions along with an unboxing video. However, the most striking aspect was not the design or sound quality of the speaker. Instead, the main focus was on the permanently attached power cable.
According to the buyer, this Google Home Speaker comes with a non-removable USB-C power cable about 1.5 meters long. The cable then connects to a detachable 30W power adapter. This means that while the power adapter can be replaced, the cable attached to the speaker cannot simply be unplugged and swapped out.
Concerns About Repair and Durability
The Reddit user mentioned, “Unfortunately, the most noticeable thing for me is the non-removable power cable,” adding that this is a “nightmare for repairs.” The unboxing video shows there is no standard USB-C port on the speaker itself. Although the cable might be removable internally during repairs, this approach is still less consumer-friendly compared to using a detachable cable.
Satisfying Sound Quality
Behind the disappointment, the user’s initial impression of the speaker’s sound quality is mostly positive. The user, who has experience with professional audio equipment, described the sound quality as better than expected. They noted good midrange and low-frequency performance for a speaker of this size, although they preferred to slightly boost the treble in the audio settings.
The speaker is also reported to be quite loud and capable of delivering adequate audio quality, leading the user to plan to make it their main speaker in the living room. Additionally, they appreciated Google’s touch controls, which use hidden lights under the fabric mesh to indicate volume settings.
Criticism of Physical Design
Of course, not all aspects of the speaker’s physical design are satisfying. Besides the attached cable, the user also noted that the fabric mesh covering the speaker feels somewhat loose compared to the hard body underneath. This might be an issue with that particular unit, but it raises concerns about long-term durability and potential damage.
Overall, these are just the early impressions from a first owner of the Google Home Speaker. More time is needed to thoroughly evaluate the device. Despite some points to consider, the sound quality offers positive hope for gadget enthusiasts.
