Google Introduces Fitbit Edge: Affordable Fitness Tracker with Display

Google has launched its latest fitness tracker, the Fitbit Edge, designed to offer users a more budget-friendly and lighter option compared to smartwatches like the Pixel Watch 5 and the Fitbit Air. With a display that sets it apart from its screenless predecessor, the Fitbit Edge aims to combine functionality and affordability.

Design and Display Features

The Fitbit Edge features a 1.34-inch AMOLED display that supports always-on functionality, making it easy to check important stats at a glance. With a sleek aluminum case measuring 11.5mm in thickness and weighing just 17.7 grams without the band, this tracker is both lightweight and stylish. A physical button located on the right side aids users in navigating the device's interface.

Interface and Functionality

Unlike the Pixel Watch 5, the Fitbit Edge does not utilize WearOS. Instead, it operates on a custom tile-based interface that draws inspiration from the Pixel Watch, providing glanceable complications. Users can access a variety of features including Google Maps, media controls, and notifications for calls and messages. Furthermore, essential health and fitness metrics such as step counts, heart rate, sleep data, and weather updates are readily available.

Health and Fitness Tracking Capabilities

The Fitbit Edge boasts support for over 50 exercise modes and offers real-time guidance during workouts. It also comes equipped with GPS tracking and automatic activity recognition, ensuring that your fitness journey is accurately recorded. For health monitoring, the device includes advanced sensors: red and infrared sensors for blood oxygen (SpO2) measurements, electrical sensors for ECG readings, a PPG optical heart rate sensor, and a far-field skin temperature sensor.

Battery Life and Pricing

Powered by the Ambiq AP5 MCU and equipped with 64MB of NOR flash memory, the Fitbit Edge is rated for IP68 water resistance, allowing it to withstand immersion up to 50 meters. A 65mAh battery promises up to 7 days of usage on a single charge, making it convenient for daily wear without frequent recharging. The Fitbit Edge is available for pre-order at a price of $180, with options including Matte Black Aluminum, Satin Silver Aluminum, Satin Pyrite Aluminum, and Champagne Gold, each paired with different band colors. Additionally, a special edition designed in collaboration with Stephen Curry is available for $220.

The Fitbit Edge will officially hit shelves on October 27, offering consumers an innovative and affordable option in the fitness tracker market.
