Running Googlebook OS on MacBook: A New Possibility

In an exciting development for tech enthusiasts, a developer named Skylar Taylor-Barrick has successfully launched Googlebook OS, an Android-based operating system for laptops created by Google, on Mac devices powered by Apple Silicon.

Introduction to the Project

Utilizing an open-source project called gbos-vm, Mac users can now experience the interface and features of Googlebook OS within a virtual machine. This means there's no need to invest in physical Googlebook hardware to explore its capabilities.

Overcoming Technical Challenges

A notable achievement of this project is the successful integration of hardware-based graphics acceleration, which has traditionally posed challenges when running cross-architecture virtual machines. Googlebook OS relies on the Vulkan graphics API, whereas Apple's macOS utilizes the Metal graphics system. To bridge this gap, Taylor-Barrick employed MoltenVK, a translation layer that converts Vulkan commands to Metal, allowing the operating system's interface to be processed directly by the Apple Silicon GPU instead of overloading the CPU.

How gbos-vm Works

The gbos-vm project utilizes an official recovery image from Googlebook, downloaded directly from Google’s servers. As this image is meant for physical computers, the vendor partition was reconstructed using components from Google Cuttlefish’s virtual device project, while the system partition remains intact. This allows for a more seamless experience.

Requirements and Limitations

To try out gbos-vm, users will need specific hardware specifications and supporting software. Although it successfully runs the Chrome browser and the interface with GPU acceleration, Taylor-Barrick cautions that this project is purely experimental. It comes with various limitations in terms of security and stability.

For developers and tech enthusiasts, the gbos-vm project offers an intriguing opportunity to explore the Googlebook OS ecosystem directly on Apple hardware. However, it is not yet recommended for everyday computing tasks, as pointed out in reports by Techspot.
