Samsung Enhances Galaxy Z Fold8 for Better Durability and Slim Design

Samsung has taken a fresh approach in designing its latest Galaxy Z Series, which includes the Galaxy Z Fold8, Z Fold8 Ultra, and Z Flip8. This new direction features the introduction of Flex Titanium technology and the use of silicon-carbon batteries, aiming to redefine how users interact with foldable devices.

Revolutionizing Foldable Technology

Sunghoon Moon, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Mobile R&D Office, emphasized that the company views foldable phones as more than just a design trend; they are seen as an evolution in user interaction with technology. "From the beginning, we recognized foldables as a new form factor and a novel way for users to engage with their smartphones. Over seven generations, we have studied how users open, fold, carry, and depend on their devices daily. These insights guide the development of each Galaxy Z Series generation," Moon stated during the Samsung Unpacked event in London.

Meeting User Demands

In developing the latest Galaxy Z Series, Samsung identified key user demands for a larger, immersive display, a thinner and more robust design, and flagship performance. To achieve these goals, Samsung introduced Flex Titanium, a groundbreaking supporting material that combines ultra-thin titanium-alloy film with precision-engineered titanium plates.

This titanium material was chosen for its excellent strength-to-weight ratio and resistance to deformation under constant pressure. However, maintaining flexibility in such a sturdy material for foldable screens posed significant challenges. "Our objective was to create a thinner and lighter foldable smartphone without compromising durability or visual experience. To facilitate this, we restructured the support system that protects the ultra-thin OLED panel while ensuring the necessary flexibility for daily folding activities," explained Moon.

Innovative Battery Technology

The implementation of Flex Titanium has reduced display module thickness by 10%, which not only makes the screen crease less visible but also frees up internal space for a larger battery, enhanced cooling system, and improved camera module. This additional space has been utilized in the battery sector, where Samsung has revamped the battery system by adopting silicon-carbon materials. This technology significantly increases energy density compared to conventional batteries, allowing the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra to feature a 5,000mAh battery while maintaining a slimmer profile.

"Users want longer battery life, faster charging, and an even slimmer design without sacrificing safety or reliability. Therefore, we not only increased battery capacity but also redesigned the entire battery system," Moon emphasized.

Advanced Charging Solutions

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8 also include Dual-Path Charging architecture, which distributes electrical current more evenly, ensuring cooler temperature management and more stable charging performance. Thanks to 45W Super Fast Charging, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra's battery can reach up to 67% charge in approximately 30 minutes.

For the more compact Galaxy Z Flip8, Samsung has implemented a tailored charging architecture that optimally fits the design's space and cooling system requirements.

A Holistic Development Approach

Behind innovations like Flex Titanium and silicon-carbon batteries lies Samsung's emphasis on an integrated R&D approach. Moon stated, "In foldable smartphones, every component is interconnected. When we aim to make a device thinner, the display, hinge, battery, cooling system, and internal structure must be redesigned simultaneously. Samsung optimizes the entire device as a single system rather than each component separately."

Before hitting the market, these devices undergo rigorous testing in laboratories. Samsung claims that the latest Galaxy Z Series has passed over 100 reliability tests, including drop simulations, repeated folding, extreme pressure tests, and resistance to moisture and dust exposure.

"Everything begins with the user. Over seven generations, we have continuously translated user insights into innovations in materials, components, and user experience. This philosophy will remain our foundation for delivering foldable smartphones that are increasingly thinner, more durable, powerful, and intuitive year after year," he concluded.
