Consumers looking to buy new laptops in 2027 should prepare for potential price increases. The anticipated rise in laptop prices is linked to escalating costs of key components such as RAM, SSDs, and processors.
This warning comes from market research firm TrendForce, which released a report detailing the situation. The rising production costs are expected to challenge laptop manufacturers, forcing them to make tough decisions about pricing and specifications.
Rising Component Costs
According to TrendForce, the pressure on production costs will be a significant hurdle for the laptop industry in 2027. This situation could weaken consumer demand, which has already shown signs of slowing down.
In their report published on October 8, 2026, TrendForce provided an example of a mid-range laptop priced at approximately USD 900 (around IDR 15 million). As of the third quarter of 2026, costs associated with processors, DRAM, and SSDs accounted for about 68% of the total material cost of such devices.
Manufacturers' Dilemma
The increased costs of these three components are likely to exert significant pressure on laptop production expenses. TrendForce points out that manufacturers are faced with a difficult choice: raise retail prices and risk diminishing demand, or absorb the rising costs and sacrifice profit margins.
Another option is to reduce specifications, such as RAM capacity, to keep production costs manageable. However, this strategy could render products less competitive in the market.
Impact of AI Demand on Component Supply
One of the driving forces behind these price pressures is the heightened demand for memory used in artificial intelligence (AI) servers. Chip manufacturers are increasingly allocating their production capacity to meet the needs of AI data centers.
As a result, the supply of DRAM for personal computers is likely to experience limited growth throughout 2027. Meanwhile, the supply of NAND Flash used in SSDs is expected to improve in the latter half of 2027 as production capacity increases.
Broader Economic Factors and Market Predictions
Other components, such as printed circuit boards (PCBs), capacitors, and power management chips, are also facing cost pressures. Rising raw material prices and geopolitical issues further complicate the supply chain.
TrendForce predicts that global laptop shipments in 2027 will decline by a low single-digit percentage compared to the previous year. However, if DRAM and processor prices remain high and the burden of increased costs falls on consumers, the decline in laptop shipments could worsen to a high single-digit percentage.
This price increase may lead consumers to delay purchases or continue using older laptops for a longer time. This scenario contrasts sharply with 2026, where laptop shipments benefited from improved processor availability and early purchases by both manufacturers and consumers.
Ultimately, TrendForce believes that laptop manufacturers will find it increasingly difficult to balance retail prices, specifications, and profitability in 2027. However, it remains uncertain whether price increases will apply across the entire market, including in Indonesia. The extent of price changes will depend on individual manufacturers' strategies, component supply conditions, and consumer demand trends.
