RAM Price Surge Shakes Up CMF's Latest Phone Launch Plans

Mobile Industry Impacted by Rising RAM Prices

Recently, the mobile phone industry has faced significant challenges due to soaring prices of memory components, especially RAM. This time, CMF, a sub-brand of Nothing known for its budget-friendly phones, has been forced to cancel the launch of its latest device. This decision was revealed by Akis Evangelidis, one of Nothing's co-founders, via their official account on platform X (formerly known as Twitter).

Cancellation of CMF Phone 2 Pro Launch

Evangelidis confirmed that the development of the successor to the CMF Phone 2 Pro had to be halted due to sharply rising component costs. According to him, with the current unstable RAM prices, the company cannot produce a device that truly offers a significant upgrade while maintaining the affordable pricing that is characteristic of the CMF line.

“We were actually working to complete its successor, but with the current memory prices, we cannot create a phone that feels like a real upgrade at a reasonable price for CMF. Therefore, we have decided not to release a new CMF phone this year,” said Evangelidis, as reported by 9to5Google.

Facing a Supply Crisis

This component supply crisis is not new to Nothing. The company’s CEO and founder, Carl Pei, had previously revealed the serious impact of rising memory prices on the production costs of their mid-range phones. He cited the situation with the Nothing Phone (4a), where memory costs increased drastically from the decision to produce the device until its launch.

“For the Phone 4A, memory costs doubled between the time we decided to build the device and when it was launched. In fact, costs have doubled again since then,” Pei lamented. He also emphasized that RAM has now become the most expensive component in a smartphone.

Global Impact on Tech Giants

The RAM price issue affects not only budget phone makers like Nothing but also extends to major technology giants. Apple, for example, has also felt the impact of rising component prices. Apple CEO Tim Cook recently announced that they will raise product prices in response to ongoing cost pressures. “This situation has become unsustainable,” Cook stated.

Hope for CMF Fans

Although CMF fans will have to wait longer to see new devices, Evangelidis affirmed that the company still has plans to launch other products soon. This offers hope to loyal consumers eagerly awaiting innovations from this budget phone line.

With the challenges currently faced by the mobile industry, including significant component price increases, we can see how manufacturers are adapting and seeking solutions to continue meeting market needs. While the CMF Phone 2 Pro will not arrive this year, we can still expect exciting surprises from Nothing in the future.
