Samsung has unveiled its latest innovation, the Bespoke AI 4-Door Refrigerator with Family Hub, which integrates advanced artificial intelligence to revolutionize kitchen management. This smart refrigerator is capable of accurately detecting food items, enabling users to enjoy features like listening to Spotify and watching YouTube right from their kitchen.
Revolutionary AI Vision Technology
According to Bernard Ang, the Regional Head of Home Appliances at Samsung Electronics Southeast Asia and Oceania, the refrigerator's food detection capability is powered by a feature called AI Vision. This technology allows the fridge to seamlessly recognize newly added food items as they are placed inside.
Overcoming Challenges in Food Recognition
Bernard explained that the development of AI Vision faced two significant challenges. The system must identify objects from various angles, and it also relies heavily on lighting conditions. For instance, if the refrigerator is opened in a dark environment, the detection can become more difficult. Previously, Samsung’s refrigerators utilized on-device AI, but advancements this year have led to the integration of cloud-based AI. This improvement expands the range of food items that the refrigerator can recognize.
Managing Food Inventory and Expiration Dates
With the AI Vision technology, the refrigerator can identify a wider array of food products. In instances where an item is not recognized, users have the option to manually enter the food's name using the AI Food Manager app. Additionally, the AI-enabled camera keeps track of expiration dates, sending notifications to connected smartphones through the SmartThings app when items are nearing their expiry.
Recipe Suggestions and Shopping Lists
The refrigerator not only aids in food recognition but also assists users in meal preparation. By analyzing the available ingredients, the AI can suggest recipes, informing users of what items they already have and what needs to be purchased. This feature streamlines the shopping process by generating a Shopping List, ensuring that users do not overlook necessary ingredients.
Furthermore, Samsung has introduced the FoodNote widget, which offers shopping suggestions based on users' eating habits and frequently used ingredients. The refrigerator’s large 32-inch LCD display, complemented by Samsung’s AI assistant Bixby, allows for easy control through voice commands, making it feel more interactive.
Entertainment Features for a Modern Kitchen
In addition to its practical functionalities, the refrigerator provides entertainment options. Users can listen to music via Spotify or watch cooking tutorials on YouTube while preparing meals, making the kitchen experience enjoyable and efficient. The interactive nature of the fridge, powered by Bixby, enables it to respond to user commands and engage in conversation, further enhancing its usability.
