Apple Unveils New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra Chips

Apple has officially launched its latest lineup of professional desktop computers, the Mac Studio. This new generation integrates the Mac Studio line under cutting-edge M5 Max and M5 Ultra chipsets.

Design and Internal Upgrades

While the physical design remains compact, similar to its predecessor, significant internal modifications have been made to handle high workloads and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) processing. The standout feature of this release is the introduction of the M5 Ultra chip.

M5 Ultra Chip: Performance Redefined

The M5 Ultra chip represents a remarkable advancement, achieved by combining two M5 Max chips through the latest UltraFusion technology, leading to a quad-die architecture. This powerhouse processor boasts a CPU configuration of up to 36 cores, consisting of 12 super cores and 24 performance cores, along with a GPU that can reach up to 80 cores.

In comparison to the previous M3 Ultra generation, the M5 Ultra delivers graphics performance that is up to 1.8 times faster and a CPU speed that is 1.3 times greater. Additionally, it features an astonishing integrated memory bandwidth of up to 1.2 terabytes per second.

AI Computing Performance

Apple describes the new Mac Studio as a monumental leap for AI computing. With the inclusion of a Neural Accelerator in every GPU core, the M5 Ultra can achieve peak AI computing performance that is up to 4.3 times faster than the M3 Ultra.

This system is complemented by a massive unified memory capacity of up to 512 GB, allowing AI researchers and software developers to run large language models (LLMs) locally while ensuring complete privacy.

Connectivity and Pricing

Interestingly, with support for Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA connections, users can cluster up to four Mac Studio units, enhancing AI inference speeds by up to three times.

The Mac Studio equipped with the M5 Max chip starts at USD 2,499 (approximately IDR 38 million) for the 36 GB RAM and 512 GB storage variant. Meanwhile, the base model of the M5 Ultra is priced from USD 5,499 (around IDR 84 million), featuring 96 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD.

Pre-orders are now open, with official availability set to start on September 22, 2026, coinciding with the launch of macOS 27 Golden Gate. The highest configuration of the M5 Ultra, featuring 512 GB RAM, is expected to follow by the end of October 2026.
