MediaTek has officially launched its latest processor, the Dimensity 9600 Pro, designed to rival Apple's A20 Pro. This new chipset is notable for being the first from MediaTek to utilize 2-nanometer (nm) manufacturing technology, which is the same cutting-edge process used by Apple for its A20 Pro in the iPhone 18 Pro.
Specifications and Performance Enhancements
The Dimensity 9600 Pro features a unique CPU configuration of 2+3+3 all-big-core architecture, diverging from the six-core CPU found in the A20 Pro. The two primary cores of the Dimensity 9600 Pro can reach speeds of up to 4.55 GHz, promising significant performance improvements. MediaTek claims a 17% increase in single-core performance and a 15% boost in multi-core performance when compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 9500.
Energy Efficiency and Memory Support
In addition to performance, MediaTek emphasizes the Dimensity 9600 Pro's efficiency. The power consumption in multi-core workloads has reportedly decreased by up to 61% compared to earlier models. This chipset also supports LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage, paving the way for next-generation flagship Android smartphones to achieve higher memory bandwidth and data transfer speeds.
Artificial Intelligence Features
One of the standout features of the Dimensity 9600 Pro is its AI capabilities. It is equipped with a 1090 NPU and a new architecture that allows seamless integration between the CPU, NPU, GPU, and ISP. This set-up enables the chipset to handle AI models with up to 30 billion parameters locally, reducing reliance on cloud servers for generative AI tasks. MediaTek reports a 51% increase in LLM prefill capabilities and a 55% improvement in token generation efficiency per watt compared to previous generations.
Competing with Apple's A20 Pro
The Dimensity 9600 Pro is positioned to go head-to-head with Apple's A20 Pro, which boasts a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple claims that its memory bandwidth is 50% higher than that of the A19 Pro, with GPU performance up by 40%. While Apple asserts that the A20 Pro outperforms competitors, MediaTek's approach focuses on an all-big-core eight-core CPU design that emphasizes energy efficiency and advanced AI capabilities.
The Dimensity 9600 Pro is not just a theoretical chip; it is set to debut in the upcoming Oppo Find X10 Pro Max, which will be marketed internationally. Although specific countries have yet to be confirmed, the phone has already passed necessary certifications for release in Indonesia. Other brands, such as Xiaomi and Vivo, are also expected to adopt this new MediaTek chip in their future smartphone releases.
