Midjourney's Latest Innovation: A Revolutionary Body Scanner
Midjourney, a company known for its artificial intelligence (AI) technology capable of generating images from text descriptions, is now stepping into an exciting new field. They have announced the development of a body scanner that is claimed to be much faster than MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans. This project marks Midjourney's first step in creating medical hardware products through their new division called Midjourney Medical.
Impressive Scanning Speed
The body scanner, named Midjourney Scanner, is designed to scan the entire human body in less than 60 seconds. In comparison, conventional MRI scans typically take between 60 to 90 minutes. Thus, the scanning speed of the Midjourney Scanner is nearly 100 times faster than current modern MRI machines.
Unique Working Method of the Midjourney Scanner
The scanning process with the Midjourney Scanner is quite interesting and different from traditional methods. The user stands on a platform that is slowly lowered into water at a speed of about 5 centimeters per second. During this process, the user's body passes through a ring consisting of approximately 500,000 tiny ultrasonic elements, each about the size of a grain of sand.
Each element can emit ultrasonic waves and simultaneously capture the reflected waves returning from the user's body. Midjourney describes this process as being surrounded by hundreds of thousands of mini dolphins using echolocation to map objects around them. The data collected from this process is then processed to produce a highly detailed three-dimensional (3D) map of the human body, down to millimeter fragments.
Strategic Partnership with Butterfly Network
The development of the Midjourney Scanner was not done by Midjourney alone. They partnered with Butterfly Network, a company known for its portable ultrasound devices. In November 2025, Midjourney signed a licensing agreement granting exclusive rights to Butterfly Network's ultrasound-on-chip technology. This collaboration is expected to accelerate the development of this innovative body scanning device.
The Team Behind the Midjourney Scanner Innovation
The project leader for the Midjourney Scanner development is Ahmad Abbas, who previously worked at Apple and was involved in the development of the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset. Ahmad joined Midjourney at the end of 2023, and with his experience and knowledge, he is expected to bring new innovations to medical devices utilizing AI technology.
