Nintendo has clarified that the first-generation Nintendo Switch will remain on sale globally, despite plans to halt sales in Europe starting February 2027. Sales Continuation in Other Markets
According to Video Games Chronicle, the decision to stop sales is specific to regions under Nintendo of Europe's operation. Hence, markets such as North America, Japan, Australia, and several Asian countries will continue to receive supply of the first-generation Nintendo Switch as long as there is sufficient demand.
Reasons for European Sales Halt
The halt in European sales is not due to a decline in consumer interest but is a reaction to new regulations from the European Union that will take effect on February 18, 2027. These regulations require electronic devices with rechargeable batteries to have removable and easily replaceable batteries. Unfortunately, all first-generation Switch models, including the Switch Lite and Switch OLED, do not comply with these legal requirements.
Future of the Nintendo Switch
To meet these new regulations, Nintendo is preparing a revised hardware version of the Nintendo Switch 2 specifically for the European market, which will include eco-friendly battery designs.
