Google Welcomes Apple's Entry Into Foldable Phone Market

Apple Joins the Foldable Phone Arena

Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with its new iPhone Duo. Rather than perceiving this as a threat, Google sees Apple's move as a way to boost the overall popularity of foldable devices.

Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem, shared his thoughts during an interview with Tom's Guide. He noted that Android has been a pioneer in the foldable phone technology space.

Android's Head Start in Foldable Technology

Android devices have been in the foldable market since before Apple introduced its offerings. Samsung launched its first Galaxy Fold in 2019, establishing a firm presence well ahead of Apple. With Apple's entry, the foldable category is now entering a new phase.

Samat expressed his personal enthusiasm for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which he uses to enhance his productivity. He praised the device for its capabilities, stating, "The Fold 8 is an incredible device that helps me accomplish a lot of tasks. I often start my work on it before switching to my laptop."

Market Growth Predictions

According to Counterpoint Research, Apple's entrance could significantly shift consumer attention towards foldable phones. The firm predicts Apple could secure approximately 25% of the global foldable phone market by 2026, despite a shorter sales period due to the late launch of the iPhone Duo. By 2027, this figure could increase to 40%, with global shipments of foldable devices expected to grow by 37%.

Samat believes this growth will ultimately benefit the entire Android ecosystem. As more consumers show interest in foldable phones, developers will have greater incentives to create applications optimized for larger screens.

Developer Adaptation and App Support

One of the historical challenges for Android foldable phones has been app support, as not all applications were designed to take advantage of larger displays. However, Google claims thousands of apps are now beginning to adapt to this format.

Samat added, "As this form factor gains popularity, developers are realizing the value in investing in it. We’ve made it easier for them to adapt their tools, and there are already thousands of apps that have made the transition."

Apple's Ecosystem Advantage

Apple possesses a significant advantage with its robust ecosystem. Users of iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices might need compelling reasons to switch to Android. Therefore, the introduction of the iPhone Duo could attract Apple users who previously had no foldable options without leaving their familiar ecosystem.

For Android, this scenario could lead to an expanded market for foldable phones. The competition between Android and Apple extends beyond hardware; it encompasses applications and user experience. Apple has encouraged developers to optimize their apps for the large screens of the iPhone Duo, with examples like Slack and Netflix showcasing tailored experiences.

Google also claims many of its apps, including Gmail and YouTube, have been adapted for foldable devices. TikTok, for instance, is optimized for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, enhancing user engagement through its unique screen format. Samat believes that as more applications support this format, the category as a whole will strengthen.

Looking Ahead

Samat emphasizes that Google does not view Apple's arrival as a direct competition between the iPhone Duo and the Galaxy Z Fold. Instead, the broader competition focuses on making foldable phones a standard category within the smartphone market. Increased consumer adoption and developer optimization will benefit both Android and Apple as the foldable phone market grows.
