Smart Glasses Market Sees Significant Growth in 2026

The smart glasses market has experienced remarkable growth over the past year, with a significant surge in shipments and a clear leader emerging in Meta. As of the first half of 2026, global shipments of AI glasses increased by an impressive 263% compared to the previous year, indicating a growing interest in this innovative technology.

Growth in Display-less Smart Glasses

A major contributor to this surge is the display-less segment of the smart glasses category. According to Counterpoint Research’s latest Intelligent Eyewear Market Tracker, shipments of these more affordable and established models, such as the Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses, rose by 258% year over year. This growth reflects an increase of 22% compared to the second half of 2025, showcasing the rising popularity of simpler smart eyewear.

Meta's Dominance in the Market

Meta has firmly established itself as the dominant force in the display-less smart glasses market, capturing an astounding 94% of the shipments in the first half of 2026. The company’s impressive growth of 260% year over year can be attributed to several factors, including the introduction of new Ray-Ban variants, expansion into additional markets, retail promotions, and the availability of more affordable Meta-branded glasses. This strategic focus has allowed Meta to maintain a leading position in an increasingly competitive landscape.

The Rise of AR Glasses

While display-less models are gaining traction, augmented reality (AR) glasses are also experiencing a notable increase in shipments, albeit from a smaller base. Counterpoint reports that shipments of AR and AI glasses surged by 449% year over year. Rokid led this segment with a 41% market share, closely followed by Meta at 37%. China's impressive 45% share of total shipments can be attributed to its well-established component supply chain, positioning it as a frontrunner in the AR glasses market.

Challenges Ahead for the Smart Glasses Industry

Despite the positive trends, the smart glasses industry faces some potential challenges. Rising component costs and growing public concerns regarding privacy and camera usage could pose significant hurdles. These issues have been prevalent in the tech industry and have become particularly relevant as smart glasses gain broader acceptance. For instance, Meta has encountered difficulties with the recording indicator on its glasses, highlighting the complexity of navigating privacy concerns in this evolving market.

Nevertheless, Counterpoint Research remains optimistic about the future of AI glasses, predicting that these challenges will not hinder overall growth. The firm anticipates the development of new form factors designed to bypass camera-related issues entirely. One potential innovation is camera-free AI audio glasses, which Meta is reportedly considering, focusing instead on microphones and AI capabilities.

As we look ahead, the smart glasses industry appears poised for continued growth and innovation, driven by advancements in technology and changing consumer preferences.
