Pebble Offers Free Replacements for Faulty Time 2 Watches

Pebble has recently taken significant steps to address concerns from Pebble Time 2 users reporting screen cracks during ordinary use. In a commendable move, the company is providing free replacements for affected devices, even for those that are technically out of warranty.

Understanding the Issue

Following a surge of complaints, Pebble's founder, Eric Migicovsky, reached out to clarify the situation. He revealed that the company has received 51 reports of cracked screens from approximately 22,000 Pebble Time 2 watches sold. This response rate, while concerning for those affected, reflects that the majority of users have not encountered this issue.

Replacement Process Made Simple

If you own a Pebble Time 2 and have experienced hardware-related problems, such as a cracked screen or poor battery life, the replacement process is straightforward. Users need to submit a bug report via the Pebble app, including photographic evidence of the damage. Upon verification, Pebble will replace the watch at no cost.

Commitment to Customer Care

Pebble has already dispatched around 330 replacement units to customers. The company has expressed its commitment to continue this replacement program for as long as feasible. Future plans include offering discounted replacements and potentially selling complete front display assemblies for users interested in DIY repairs.

Addressing Other Concerns

Beyond the cracked screens, Pebble is also addressing other manufacturing issues. Some users have reported that buttons have popped off due to an internal clip malfunction, with around 30 such reports filed. Migicovsky assured that manufacturing adjustments have been made to prevent this issue in future production runs.

Battery life has emerged as another concern for a minority of users. Although the Pebble Time 2 is designed for a week of battery life, some users have experienced significantly shorter durations. Pebble has identified various causes for these discrepancies and is tightening checks on power consumption during manufacturing.

During discussions with Migicovsky, it was refreshing to hear that Pebble acknowledges these challenges. Building hardware involves complexities, particularly for a smaller company like Pebble, where much of the assembly is done manually. The focus remains on minimizing errors and ensuring customer satisfaction.

As reports of cracked screens increased, Pebble's proactive response is likely a relief for many users. Knowing that the company is willing to stand by its customers signals a commitment to quality and service that is often lacking in the tech industry.
