Google Enhances Android Automotive with New Apps and Features

Google has rolled out an exciting update aimed at enhancing the Android Automotive platform, bringing a fresh user interface and support for a variety of new applications. This update is designed to enrich the in-car experience with popular apps, including the Firefox browser, as well as entertainment options like Starz and JioHotstar.

New Browsing and Entertainment Options

The latest update allows users to browse the internet using Firefox, alongside existing options like Chrome and Vivaldi. Users will also have the ability to stream content from platforms such as Starz and JioHotstar, or even engage in a game of Ludo King, though these features are only available when the vehicle is parked.

YouTube Background Playback Feature

One of the standout features of this update is the enhanced functionality for YouTube. While parked, users can enjoy full video playback, but as soon as the car is in motion, the app seamlessly transitions to audio-only background play. This is particularly beneficial for users who enjoy podcasts or video content that can be consumed in audio format.

Improved App Organization in Google Play Store

In addition to new apps, Google has revamped the Google Play Store experience for Android Automotive. The updated store categorizes applications based on whether they are intended for use while parked or in motion. This makes it easier for drivers to find suitable apps for different scenarios. Furthermore, the store highlights new and featured apps, providing a better overall browsing experience.

Growing Ecosystem of Apps and Partnerships

Currently, the Google Play Store hosts over 700 apps designed specifically for Android Automotive, which operates independently from Android Auto. This platform powers the car's internal systems, offering a unique experience tailored to in-vehicle use. Google has also established partnerships with several automotive manufacturers, including Mazda, Honda, and Volvo, as well as media companies like Audible and SiriusXM, to support future growth.

Vehicles equipped with Google services, often referred to as having 'Google built-in,' encompass 16 brands and over 100 models, including the latest Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. Notably, GM has shifted its focus from Android Auto to Android Automotive.

As part of its commitment to innovation, Google announced plans to open-source Android Automotive earlier this year, which could further expand its ecosystem and encourage developer engagement.

The new Google Play experience for cars is set to begin rolling out in the coming weeks and will automatically update on users' car displays.
