Theft Incident at Yoga Studio

Surveillance footage shows the suspect quickly entering the studio, taking several items including sportswear, and leaving within minutes. Outside the studio, a Waymo robot taxi was already waiting to take him away.
Broken Hopes for Law Enforcement
San Francisco police initially believed this case would be easy to solve. With the Waymo fleet equipped with 29 cameras, they thought the available footage would help identify the suspect. Sergeant Tim Faye, the detective handling the case, even stated, "I thought this case would be easier to solve if the suspect used Waymo." However, reality proved otherwise.
Challenges in Tracking the Suspect's Identity
After further investigation, the police faced two main problems in their efforts to catch the suspect. First, the account used to order the robot taxi was difficult to trace. Authorities explained that this transportation service can be accessed using stolen payment cards or temporary phone numbers (burner phones), making the suspect's true identity unclear.
Second, regarding the video footage. When the police submitted a warrant to obtain trip data and video recordings from the Waymo vehicle in April 2026, they found that the recordings from inside the vehicle cabin were no longer stored. Although footage from external cameras was still available, the faces of people recorded had been blurred as part of the company's privacy protection policy.
