Overview of Smartphone Operating Systems

The latest report from Counterpoint Research has shed light on the performance of mobile operating systems in the global smartphone market during the second quarter of 2023. This analysis focuses on smartphone shipments from April to June, providing insights into the distribution of operating systems rather than the total number of active devices.

Android's Dominance in Global Market

Android continues to lead the global market, boasting a significant share of 75%. This figure represents an increase from 73% in the first quarter of the year, solidifying Android's position as the preferred operating system worldwide. Its extensive range of devices and manufacturers contributes to this impressive market penetration.

iOS and HarmonyOS Performance

Following Android, iOS holds a 20% market share, experiencing a decline from 22% in the previous quarter. Despite this slight drop, iOS remains a strong contender, particularly in premium smartphone segments. On the other hand, HarmonyOS, developed by Huawei, maintains a 5% share, consistent with its performance in Q1 2023.

Regional Insights: US, China, and India

In the United States, iOS leads with a 51% market share, closely followed by Android at 49%. This marks a competitive landscape, with Android steadily closing the gap. Historically, iOS reached its peak in Q4 2025 with a remarkable 69% share.

Turning to China, Android also secures the top position with a 58% share, albeit down from 63% in the previous quarter. Interestingly, HarmonyOS has surged to second place with a 24% share, an increase from 19% in Q1, relegating iOS to third with an 18% share, slightly up from 17% in the prior quarter.

In India, the scenario is starkly different. Android dominates the market with a staggering 91% share, up from 90% in Q1, while iOS lags significantly with only 9%, a decrease from 10% previously. This disparity highlights Android's overwhelming presence in the Indian market.

Market Trends and Future Outlook

Counterpoint Research indicates that global smartphone shipments have seen an 11% decline in Q2 compared to the same period last year. This downturn is particularly pronounced in the entry-level and mid-tier segments, especially within emerging markets. Analysts suggest that this trend may continue as consumer preferences evolve and economic factors impact purchasing decisions.

The competition among operating systems remains fierce, with each platform adapting to market demands and technological advancements. As we move forward, it will be crucial to monitor how these operating systems respond to changing consumer needs and market dynamics.
