Implementation of New Commission Rates for GoRide and GrabBike
Starting today, July 1, 2026, the commission scheme for two-wheeled passenger transportation services from Gojek and Grab has officially been reduced to 8 percent. This policy was adopted in response to directives from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who called for adjustments to online motorcycle taxi (ojol) service commissions to improve the welfare of driver partners. With this step, it is expected that drivers' income will increase and positively impact their lives.
Comparison of Previous and New Commission Rates
Previously, app companies were allowed to charge an application usage fee of up to 15 percent of the trip fare, plus an additional 5 percent supporting fee. This meant the total commission deducted from driver partners could reach 20 percent. With the new 8 percent commission scheme in place, drivers now have the potential to earn more. For example, if the trip fare is Rp 10,000, a driver who previously received around Rp 8,000 after a 20 percent deduction could now potentially receive about Rp 9,200.
Responses from Gojek and Grab
Both Gojek and Grab have confirmed that this new scheme will be applied specifically to GoRide and GrabBike services. In an official statement, Grab said that implementing the 8 percent revenue sharing is a form of compliance with government directives and supports the spirit of a people's economy. Meanwhile, PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GoTo) also revealed that a similar policy is applied to improve the welfare of GoRide driver partners. GoTo's Deputy President Director, Catherine Hindra Sutjahyo, emphasized that this is a continuous effort to enhance the welfare of online motorcycle taxi drivers.
Challenges in Policy Implementation
Although both companies expressed support for this policy, they also acknowledged that its implementation will not be easy. Grab revealed that several adjustments must be made to keep the service affordable for the public. Additionally, it is important to ensure that driver partners' income opportunities remain intact and that the sustainability of the online transportation ecosystem is not disrupted. GoTo also admitted that applying the 8 percent commission will pose its own challenges for their two-wheeled transportation business. Balancing the improvement of driver partners' welfare, fare affordability for customers, and business sustainability are crucial factors in implementing this policy.
