Samsung Approaches Realization of Rollable Phone with 2028 Launch

Samsung's Dream of a Rollable Phone Draws Closer to Reality

Samsung has long been known as a pioneer in smartphone innovation, and now they seem closer than ever to realizing the long-anticipated rollable phone. Although the concept of an expandable phone is not new to the company, recent reports from South Korea offer renewed hope that the project is still on track.

Launch Plans for 2028

According to a report from the Korean news outlet Money Today, Samsung plans to launch its first rollable phone in the first half of 2028. Although the launch date is still quite far off, this information adds weight to rumors that have circulated for several years. The device's development is led by Samsung Electronics and involves close collaboration with their display division.

Flexible OLED Display Technology

The rumored device will use a rollable OLED panel produced by Samsung Display. While no final decisions have been made regarding specifications and design, the report indicates that the underlying technology for the rollable phone is maturing. Samsung Display has showcased various flexible OLED concepts over the years that go beyond current foldable products.

At CES 2023, Samsung introduced the Flex Hybrid display, which combines folding and sliding functions in a single panel. They also showcased the Rollable Flex, capable of stretching to more than five times its original size. Although no launch plans were announced, these demonstrations confirm that rollable phone technology is rapidly advancing.

A Challenging Innovation

Rollable phones differ from existing foldable phones. Instead of using hinges to open the screen, part of the rollable phone’s display will be hidden inside the phone’s body and will slide out when users need a larger screen. This approach promises a wider screen experience without having to carry a larger device all the time.

Of course, this innovation comes with significant engineering challenges. The screen must be able to roll and unroll multiple times without damaging the OLED panel, and the internal mechanism must be reliable for daily use over many years. Additionally, Samsung must ensure that the larger screen maintains brightness, color accuracy, and structural integrity.

Awaiting an Exciting Launch

If the report about the launch schedule is accurate, it seems we will have to wait a few more years before Samsung is ready to introduce what comes after foldable phones. Nevertheless, anticipation for this innovation is growing, and many tech enthusiasts are eager to see how Samsung will change the way we interact with mobile devices in the future.
