Spotify has unveiled an innovative feature tailored for fitness enthusiasts who enjoy listening to music while running. The newly launched Running Mode aims to provide customized playlists that align with the energy of their workout sessions.
What is Running Mode?
Running Mode is part of the Fitness Hub that Spotify introduced back in April. Currently, this feature is available exclusively on the Spotify app for iOS users across six different countries.
Personalized Playlists for Every Runner
Users can select from 25 preset options, which encompass various sports activities and music genres. Additionally, Spotify offers deeper personalization, allowing users to specify their workout methods—whether it's interval training, pyramid workouts, or steady pacing. Moreover, users can set their preferred workout duration and select music based on beats per minute (BPM).
Smooth Transitions for Optimal Experience
Once users hit the play button, Spotify generates a custom playlist based on their specified parameters. The app ensures seamless transitions between songs, maintaining the rhythm that corresponds with the user's pace. As Spotify explains, "Whether you are training for a race, enjoying a casual jog, or simply looking for motivation during a walk, Running Mode helps you spend less time searching for the right music and more time focusing on your workout."
AI-Driven Features and Audio Guidance
Running Mode utilizes artificial intelligence and expands upon the Prompted Playlist feature launched last year. Spotify noted that sports-based prompts are among the most requested features by users. In addition to generating tailored playlists, Running Mode includes audio cues that correspond to different running stages, providing motivation without interrupting the music flow. Currently, this feature is only available in English.
Running Mode was launched shortly after the discontinuation of Spotify's integration with the Strava app, which previously allowed users to manage their music through Strava. The introduction of Running Mode could serve as a great alternative for runners who wish to enjoy their favorite tracks during exercise.
At this moment, Running Mode is accessible to premium subscribers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden. However, it remains unclear when this feature will be available in Indonesia.
This isn't the first time Spotify has experimented with features aimed at runners. Back in 2015, the company introduced Spotify Running, designed to synchronize music with the running pace, but this feature was discontinued in 2018.
