Dangerous Anime Wallpapers on Steam: Beware of Lurking Malware

Platform Abuse by Cybercriminals

By embedding malware into uploaded wallpaper files, they attempt to trap unsuspecting users. Kaspersky's analysis shows that this practice has occurred and directly targets Steam users.
Malware Modus Operandi Through Wallpaper Engine
This malware does not disguise itself as a game or application but hides within the Wallpaper Engine feature on Steam Workshop. Wallpaper Engine allows users to install animated wallpapers with complex visual effects. This advantage has become a loophole for cybercriminals to insert malicious code. Kaspersky found dozens of infected wallpapers, and although the number is not very large, these wallpapers are quite popular with thousands to tens of thousands of downloads.
Majority of Victims from China
According to Kaspersky's records, most victims of this malware come from China, accounting for 89 percent, followed by Russia at around 5.5 percent. This indicates that the attacks are focused on users in certain countries. The wallpapers used as bait are designed to attract attention, often featuring anime characters or "waifu" images popular among gamers.
Serious Impact of This Malware
The main danger of this malware is not only disrupting device performance but also causing theft of important information. Once the wallpaper is installed, the malware automatically installs a backdoor and executable files disguised as games. At this stage, the malware begins searching for sensitive information stored on the victim's device, including Steam account credentials. This is a serious threat that should concern every Steam user.
With the increasing cyberattacks targeting the gaming community, it is important to always be cautious when downloading content from platforms like Steam Workshop.
