WhatsApp Launches Username Feature, Now Communicate Without Phone Numbers
WhatsApp, one of the world's most popular instant messaging apps, has just announced the launch of a highly anticipated new feature: usernames. With this feature, users can send messages without having to share their phone numbers. The feature is planned to be officially available by the end of this year, and users can start reserving usernames starting this week.
Enhanced Privacy for Users
Alice Newton-Rex, Vice President and Head of Product at WhatsApp, explained that the username feature is specifically designed for users who prefer to maintain their privacy. "Sharing a phone number often feels like a big step because a phone number is very personal information connected to many aspects of your life," she said during an online media briefing.
Newton-Rex gave an example of situations where users might want to join a group chat, such as a child's soccer team, but are not yet ready to share their phone number with new acquaintances. This is where the username feature becomes an ideal solution, giving users more control over who can see their phone number.
Flexible Use of Usernames
The username feature is optional, so users still have the choice to communicate by exchanging phone numbers as usual. However, for those who choose to use usernames, it is important to remember that others must know the full username to contact them for the first time. There will be no directory search for usernames, so only people who have the username can reach the user.
Users must also ensure that the usernames they create are unique and do not overlap with others. WhatsApp provides a username generator to help users create unique usernames. Interestingly, one username applies to only one WhatsApp account, but users can keep their chosen username even if they change their phone number.
Additional Features for Creators and Businesses
For creators, businesses, and organizations, WhatsApp offers the option to claim usernames already used on other platforms like Instagram or Facebook. This will certainly make it easier for communities and consumers to find them. In this digital era, easy access is one of the keys to building good relationships with audiences.
Easy Username Reservation Process
To reserve a username, users need to ensure their WhatsApp app is updated to the latest version. Then, users can access the Settings menu, select Account, and then Username. There, they can enter their desired username. Additionally, WhatsApp introduces an optional username lock feature, allowing users to control who can contact them via username. This feature uses a four-digit code that others must know before they can send messages or add the user to groups.
The username feature will be rolled out gradually to all WhatsApp users over the coming months. Have you thought about the username you want to use on WhatsApp? With this feature, communication becomes safer and more comfortable, especially for those who value privacy.
