WhatsApp Launches Username Feature, Communicate Without Phone Numbers
WhatsApp, the highly popular messaging app, has just launched a new feature that allows users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers. Known as "username," this feature is expected to improve user privacy and security when interacting with new contacts.
Enhanced Privacy Through Usernames
On June 30, 2026, WhatsApp announced the launch of the username feature, enabling users to start conversations without providing their phone numbers. This feature was developed by Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, to offer a new way of communicating, especially for people who are just getting to know each other. Username and Username Key Settings

The username feature is designed similarly to usernames on other apps like Telegram, X (Twitter), and Instagram. Each user can have a unique username consisting of a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as underscore symbols.
Username Creation Rules
Although official details on username creation rules have not been released, based on previous testing, there are several guidelines to keep in mind. Usernames must be between 3 and 35 characters long, contain at least one letter, and may only include lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. Certain formats resembling website addresses, such as endings with ".com" or beginnings with "www," are not allowed.
WhatsApp also emphasized that this feature will not provide a publicly searchable username directory like Instagram. This means users will not be able to find others' usernames without their consent, thus better protecting privacy.
