Choosing the Right E-Reader
In today’s digital era, owning content often feels like an illusion. We often don’t actually buy content but only get limited access to it. This applies to various types of content, such as books, movies, and games purchased from different digital platforms. Without the ability to download purchased media for offline use, we essentially own nothing.
For years, I was a loyal Kindle user, starting from the first model I got a few years after its launch, eventually upgrading to the Kindle DX and Kindle Keyboard. With free 3G connectivity, the Kindle Keyboard was my choice, even though that feature stopped working in 2021. Now, all three Kindle models I owned are officially unsupported devices.
The Decision to Switch to Xteink X4
After realizing my Kindle no longer worked, I felt it was time to replace my e-reader. However, instead of choosing another Kindle, I opted for the Xteink X4, a compact e-reader compatible with MagSafe and, most importantly, free from DRM.
All my Kindle models have now become useless. Since May 20, I can no longer download books from the Kindle Store, and trying to reset or re-register my Kindle only renders it unusable. Although these models are over a decade old, I preferred to switch before Amazon ended support for these devices.
Advantages of the Xteink X4
The Xteink X4 is an extremely compact e-reader, even smaller than most phones, with a thickness of only 5.9mm. As a startup from China, Xteink may not offer customer support or software comparable to Amazon. However, for me, this is its advantage. Xteink does not have a digital bookstore like Amazon or Kobo and uses a lightweight operating system paired with a microSD card for book storage. In other words, I don’t have to worry about my device becoming electronic waste in the future.
The Xteink X4 is designed to run DRM-free e-books downloaded as EPUB or TXT files. It can also directly display JPG and BMP documents. Through the Xteink app, MOBI and PDF files can be easily converted into readable EPUB files.
Strong Community and Support
One of the benefits of a DRM-free e-reader is software flexibility. There is an active community of Xteink users ready to help solve various issues that may arise with the device. Using the open-source Crosspoint firmware developed by the community, I don’t have to worry about long-term support from Xteink. Additionally, custom case models are available at Bambu Lab, allowing me to easily personalize the device using a 3D printer.
The Xteink X4 has a 4.3-inch screen, which may seem small compared to the 6-inch Kindle. However, I prefer an e-reader that I can carry everywhere and use offline rather than one with a larger screen or a wide digital store.
Conclusion: Is the Xteink X4 Worth Choosing?
The Xteink X4 is priced at $69, much cheaper than the cheapest Kindle without ads, which costs around $130. Although the price is more affordable, the features reflect this cost. However, the advantage of using a microSD card for expandable storage is a feature not found on Kindle devices.
It should be noted that the build quality of the Xteink X4 is a downside. After a few weeks of use, the plastic casing already shows scratches. Unlike Kindle, known for its better design and durability, the Xteink X4 is not waterproof and is not suitable for use near swimming pools.
Switching from using flagship phones or tablets back to an e-reader experience was the right decision for me. The Xteink X4 offers the freedom to read without restrictions and ensures I won’t lose access to the books I purchased, as long as the hardware still works. With support for open-source firmware and DRM-free files, I am confident this e-reader will last a long time.
