Exploring the Concept of Prefabricated Homes
Traditionally, homes have been associated with permanent structures built on land. Yet, in China, a growing number of manufacturers are offering prefabricated houses that can be ordered online and shipped internationally. These homes arrive not as fully constructed units but rather as modular building packages that are assembled on-site.
The Purchase Journey
Through Alibaba, the couple ordered their prefab home from Heshi Integrated Housing Co., a firm specializing in this innovative housing solution. According to their uploaded video, the production phase took about 30 days, followed by nearly a month of maritime shipping before the house reached their location in the United States. Upon arrival, the house was still in a shipping container, containing all the necessary building modules.
Rapid Assembly Process
Once they unpacked the container with the help of a crane, the couple was able to assemble their new home in just about a day. The finished product spans approximately 71.5 square meters and includes features such as a bedroom, kitchen, separate bathroom, and windows.
Cost Considerations
The base price for the unit was around $15,800, but after accounting for shipping, import fees, taxes, and other expenses, their total expenditure climbed to approximately $28,689. This cost, while significant, is still relatively competitive compared to traditional housing options.
One of the key advantages of prefab homes is the speed of construction. Since most components are manufactured in a factory, they can be delivered to the site for quick assembly, drastically reducing building time.
The Growing Market for Prefab Homes
Manufacturers in China are now offering a variety of models, including tiny houses, foldable container homes, futuristic capsule cabins, and modular villas. Many of these designs are said to be robust enough for residential use for up to 50 years.
Interest in prefabricated homes is evident in internet search trends. Market intelligence firm ShelfTrend reports that the keyword "Tiny House" garners over 450,000 searches per month in the U.S., while "modular homes" and "prefab homes" attract more than 201,000 and 165,000 searches monthly, respectively.
This rising interest opens up a global market for Chinese manufacturers. Serena He, founder of Luban Cabin, which is based in Linyi, Shandong Province, noted a growing demand for modular homes, especially from markets seeking flexible and cost-effective housing solutions. Their products are widely used for glamping accommodations in Australia and New Zealand, desert tourism in the Middle East, resort projects in Southeast Asia, and homestays across Europe.
According to He, a single modular unit can be set up in just one or two days, while larger projects, such as glamping sites, can be completed in roughly four weeks.
As the trend of prefab homes continues to gain momentum, it opens new avenues for both consumers and manufacturers alike, redefining the landscape of modern housing.
