Tecno, in collaboration with Brazilian visual artist Angélica Dass, has launched an innovative project titled the "100 Portraits of Becoming". This initiative aims to capture the essence of diverse identities through photography over the course of two years and across five countries.
Overview of the Initiative
The project officially kicked off on July 6, 2023, in Nairobi, Kenya, featuring local entrepreneurs, creators, and innovators. Tecno's commitment to accurately represent various skin tones is exemplified through their Universal Tone imaging technology, which will be utilized in capturing the portraits.
Capturing Authenticity with Tecno Camon 50 Ultra
All portraits will be taken using the Tecno Camon 50 Ultra, a device specifically designed to highlight the unique qualities of each individual. Participants are encouraged to wear their own clothing and be photographed in natural light without any filters, ensuring an authentic representation.
Sharing Personal Stories
Beyond just photography, the initiative will document the personal narratives of participants, focusing on their journeys and experiences navigating cultural and societal changes. These stories will accompany the portraits on the initiative’s dedicated website, providing a deeper understanding of each individual's identity.
Upcoming Locations and Dates
Following the Nairobi shoot, Angélica Dass will travel to Manila, Philippines, from August 16 to 22. The initiative will then continue to Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Brazil, with dates yet to be announced. Participants can sign up to be part of this unique project through the initiative’s website.
Angélica Dass expressed her excitement about the collaboration, stating, "My portrait practice has always been less about documenting appearance and more about creating space for people to exist beyond assumptions." She emphasized the importance of allowing identities to remain open and layered.
Jack Guo, General Manager at Tecno, added, "We want to move beyond representation as technical accuracy alone and explore representation as recognition." The initiative aims to foster a future where technology authentically reflects individuals, helping them to be seen and understood more fully.
This groundbreaking project not only highlights Tecno's commitment to diversity and representation but also showcases the power of art in bridging cultural gaps.
