The recently unveiled Fitbit Edge is on the verge of hitting stores, building on the success of its predecessor, the Fitbit Air. This new wearable offers a similar fitness tracking experience but enhances it with an interactive AMOLED display. While the Edge is certainly appealing, there are several alternatives worth considering if you're in the market for a fitness tracker or smartwatch.

Google Pixel Watch 5

The Google Pixel Watch 5 stands out as a prime alternative to the Fitbit Edge. Developed by Google, both devices share many fitness features. However, the Pixel Watch 5 offers a complete Android Wear experience, which includes access to third-party apps, microphone and speaker functions, and the advanced capabilities of Google Gemini. Its larger display simplifies navigation, and it comes with additional sensors, including NFC for seamless digital payments via Google Wallet.

On the flip side, the Pixel Watch 5 falls short in battery longevity, with a performance that can't match the Edge's impressive seven-day battery life. Additionally, it lacks iOS compatibility and is significantly pricier at approximately $399, compared to the Edge's $180 price tag.

Fitbit Air

Before the Edge, the Fitbit Air was the flagship model in this category of fitness trackers. Google designed the Air to deliver powerful fitness tracking capabilities within a budget-friendly package. While both devices track fitness data comparably, the Edge introduces an ambient light sensor, enhancing its functionality.

Battery life remains similar, with both models offering up to seven days of use, assuming the always-on display feature is disabled. The main distinction is the Edge's display, which offers functionality as a timepiece, while the Air requires a smartphone app to review data. For those who prefer not using the Edge as a watch and don't mind frequently checking their phone, the Air could save them around $80.

Samsung Galaxy Fit 3

The Samsung Galaxy Fit 3 is a budget-friendly fitness tracker priced at about $70. Despite its lower cost, it boasts a 1.6-inch AMOLED display and impressive battery life of up to two weeks. Surprisingly, it is even cheaper than the Fitbit Air, which lacks a screen.

To achieve such an attractive price point, the Galaxy Fit 3 does make some compromises. It includes essential features like heart rate monitoring, SpO2 tracking, and sleep monitoring but skips advanced features such as continuous heart rate tracking and ECG. The Fit 3 is ideal for those seeking basic fitness tracking without a flashy design, offering notifications and data viewing from the wrist while also functioning as a watch.

Oura Ring 5

For individuals who prefer discreet fitness tracking, the Oura Ring 5 is an intriguing option. Similar to the Fitbit Air, it lacks a display, but it excels in design and comfort. This smart ring is crafted to resemble fine jewelry, making it an attractive accessory.

The Oura Ring 5 provides basic fitness tracking features and delivers an exceptional sleep tracking experience, with battery life spanning between 6 to 9 days. However, it is priced at around $399, and users must subscribe for $5.99 monthly to unlock its full potential.

Fitbit Charge 6

Although the Fitbit Charge 6 is an older model, it remains a strong contender against the Fitbit Edge. Both trackers share many fundamental fitness sensors, but the Edge offers additional features such as blood pressure trend reports and loss of pulse detection. The Edge also boasts a larger, brighter display that enhances user interaction.

Battery life is comparable, though the Edge has a slight edge, potentially delivering an extra day of use. While the Edge is the more advanced device, the Charge 6 still represents excellent value for money, often available for around $135—approximately $25 less than its MSRP—and it supports digital payments, a feature that the Edge lacks.

In conclusion, while the Fitbit Edge is a solid option for fitness enthusiasts, these alternatives provide a range of features and price points to suit different preferences.
