Apple's Ambitious iPhone Launch Plans
Apple is gearing up to introduce at least five new iPhone models between the second half of 2026 and the first half of 2027. This initiative aims to enhance its competitiveness in the smartphone market, particularly as the industry faces a shortage of key components.
Increased Production of Foldable Devices
According to a report from Nikkei Asia, Apple has instructed its suppliers to prepare for the production of approximately 10 million foldable iPhones this year, a significant increase from the initial estimate of 7 to 8 million units.
Securing Components for Future Models
As the launch of its first foldable device approaches, Apple has also procured components for around 80 million smartphones, which will include various new models set to debut in the latter half of 2026. The total production forecast for Apple's smartphones in 2026 is expected to exceed 220 million units, showcasing the company's robust purchasing power in acquiring memory and other components.
Challenges Amid Global Memory Shortages
Apple's efforts to secure these components come at a time when global memory shortages, driven by demand from AI data centers, are pushing costs up across the industry. Despite this, Apple has managed to maintain its purchasing strength compared to many of its competitors, although it is not immune to rising costs. Recently, prices for its flagship products, including the MacBook and iPad, have seen significant increases.
Additionally, Bloomberg reports that Apple is currently in discussions to source memory chips for devices sold in China from local manufacturers, ChangXin Memory Technologies and Yangtze Memory Technologies. These companies are listed by the Pentagon as entities suspected of supporting Beijing's military. As of now, Apple has not confirmed these discussions, and negotiations are still ongoing.
