Microsoft has made significant efforts to enhance its Xbox platform over the years, but unfortunately, the results have not met expectations. Despite the belief that hard work yields rewards, the tech giant faces challenges in achieving its ambitious goals.

Massive Financial Commitment

According to Bloomberg, Microsoft has spent nearly USD 80 billion (approximately Rp 1.442 trillion) over the past decade to revitalize Xbox and realize its vision for Game Pass. However, the outcome has been disappointing, leaving many to question the effectiveness of this investment.

Leadership and Strategy Challenges

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma acknowledged that the extensive financial commitments were made under previous leadership, which included strategies like acquiring game studios and releasing titles on competing platforms. While these efforts generated some value, they were insufficient to achieve the desired growth.

Game Pass Subscription Struggles

As part of its acquisition strategy, Microsoft aimed to reach 77 million Game Pass subscribers by the end of fiscal year 2026. However, current subscriber numbers stand at only 30 million, a significant shortfall. This figure also represents a decline of 4 million subscribers from previous reports, raising alarms among Xbox employees.

Customer Retention Issues

Matthew Ball, Xbox's head of strategy, revealed in June that many users canceled their Game Pass subscriptions following a 50% price increase announced in October 2025. The subscription model, which offers access to a variety of games, has yet to capture the attention of gamers effectively.

Analyst Mat Piscatella pointed out that Game Pass has struggled because competitors like Fortnite have successfully engaged gamers for longer durations, encouraging them to spend money on in-game purchases. He noted that the issue lies not within the service itself but rather in the approach to selling subscriptions and services.

Despite launching popular titles like Call of Duty on Game Pass, there has been little impact on subscriber growth or hardware sales, indicating a need for a revised strategy. Furthermore, former Xbox president Sarah Bond, who led Game Pass strategy, oversaw approximately USD 1 billion spent annually on third-party game deals to attract subscribers.

Microsoft's substantial expenditures, including the USD 75.4 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard and USD 7.5 billion for ZeniMax, were part of a broader initiative to expand its studio base and increase the quantity of games available to Game Pass members as part of their subscription.

While Microsoft's investment in Xbox reflects a commitment to growth and innovation, the road ahead appears challenging as the company reevaluates its strategies to better connect with gamers and achieve its ambitious targets.
