Microsoft Explores Copilot as a New Operating System

Microsoft has historically viewed Windows and Copilot as separate entities: one being an operating system (OS) and the other an AI assistant. However, recent leaks have shed light on an intriguing internal experiment from the company.

Introduction to Project Aion

Referred to as Project Aion, this internal prototype aims to redefine the relationship between Copilot and Windows. Instead of merely functioning as an assistant, Copilot is envisioned to embody the OS itself, doing away with the traditional Start menu, Taskbar, and the familiar desktop interface that has remained unchanged for over thirty years.

The Radical Redesign

A leaked video, which surfaced on the Discord server BetaWiki, showcases this innovative operating system, described as an agentic OS that operates entirely on the web. In this prototype, Copilot is embedded deeply within the core shell of the system, fundamentally altering the user experience.

Introducing Win3

The experimental system is built upon a completely new Windows codebase, dubbed 'Win3'. Designed to be lightweight and fully web-based, Win3 utilizes the Edge browser and Chromium layout engine as its primary shell, facilitating the AI-driven experience that Copilot offers.

Implications for the Future

Project Aion represents a significant shift in how users might engage with their PCs. The features demonstrated in the leaked video suggest a bold new direction for Microsoft. While some sources confirm the authenticity of the video—despite it being nearly two years old—it's uncertain whether Project Aion will lead to a tangible product or remain an ephemeral internal experiment. Given its age, it’s quite likely that the project has since been discontinued.

Even if Aion never becomes a standalone operating system, this prototype illustrates how far Microsoft is willing to go in redefining Windows in pursuit of their AI aspirations.
