Fans of gaming culture are in for a treat as Netflix embarks on a new project inspired by a beloved video game series. The streaming giant is currently developing a live-action adaptation of the acclaimed game franchise, Persona.
Creative Team Behind the Series
The writing team will be led by Christopher Monfette, who is not only the head writer but also serves as the executive producer and showrunner. Monfette has made a name for himself in the industry through his work on various television series, including Star Trek: Picard, 12 Monkeys, and the 9-1-1 franchise.
Joining him in the executive producer role are Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Robert Atwood from 21 Laps Entertainment, along with Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson from Story Kitchen. Additionally, Toru Nakahara from SEGA will also participate as an executive producer.
Project Development Oversight
Emily Feher from 21 Laps is tasked with overseeing the project's development. Feher has an ongoing contract with Netflix for multiple films, indicating a strong commitment to delivering quality content.
Status of Casting and Cultural Representation
As of now, details regarding the casting of the live-action adaptation remain scarce. There is no confirmation on whether the film will feature Japanese actors or embrace a Western cultural backdrop. The project is still in the development phase, and the release date has yet to be announced.
The Persona Franchise Legacy
The Persona franchise has established itself as a significant player in the role-playing game (RPG) genre. Each installment offers unique narratives, but they consistently center around high school students in Japan navigating their daily lives while confronting supernatural threats.
Developed by Atlus’s P-Studios and published by SEGA, the franchise comprises six main series titles, with a seventh currently underway. Additionally, there are 15 spin-off series related to this iconic gaming universe. The franchise began as a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei series, with the first title, Revelations: Persona, debuting in 1996. The latest game installment, Persona 5: The Phantom X, is set for release in 2025.
