Enhance Your Gboard Experience with Personal Dictionary on Android

Using autocorrect on Android devices can often lead to frustration, as it may change correct words into incorrect ones. Fortunately, Gboard, Google's default keyboard, offers a hidden feature called Personal Dictionary that can significantly improve your typing experience.

What is Personal Dictionary?

The Personal Dictionary feature allows users to add custom words that Google may not recognize, correct autocorrect errors, and even create text shortcuts. This way, you can type emails, phone numbers, or specific phrases more efficiently without the need for excessive typing.

How to Access and Customize Your Personal Dictionary

To get started, you need to open the Gboard settings. You can do this by launching Gboard in any app, then tapping the gear icon in the upper right corner of your screen.

Next, scroll down until you find the option labeled Dictionary. Tap on it, then select Personal Dictionary and choose your preferred language, such as English (UK) or Indonesian.

Adding New Words and Shortcuts

To add a new word, simply tap the + icon in the upper right corner. Enter the desired word in the first line. If you want to create a shortcut, fill in the line below it with the shortcut you wish to use. For instance, you could add your work email with the shortcut “tmail” to save time when typing.

Once you have added everything correctly, tap the Back button to return to the previous page.

Testing Your Custom Words

Return to any app that requires typing and test the custom words you’ve added. These words may not appear instantly, but they should show up in the autocorrect suggestions at the top of Gboard.

Keep in mind that if you ever uninstall Gboard or clear its cache, all your custom words will be lost. To prevent this, it’s advisable to back up your dictionary. Tap the three-dot icon in the upper right corner, select Export, choose a default storage option like Google Drive, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Importing Your Dictionary Back

If you need to import your dictionary back into Gboard, simply tap the three-dot icon again and select Import. Locate the backup file and tap on it. If Gboard cannot find the file in Google Drive, download the backup to your phone, and it should appear without issues.

By following these steps, users can create a personal dictionary filled with custom words and shortcuts that will remain untouched by autocorrect. This feature is especially beneficial for those frequently typing technical terms, brand names, or specific abbreviations that may not exist in Gboard's default dictionary.

Moreover, users can take advantage of the latest features from various applications to enhance productivity. For anyone looking to optimize their typing experience on Android, the Personal Dictionary feature serves as a practical solution without the need for third-party applications. By customizing your personal dictionary, you can type faster and more accurately.
