Sony has introduced its latest compact cinema camera, the FX5, marking a significant addition to its product lineup. While some may view the FX5 as an upgrade from the FX3 released in 2021, it comes with a higher price point, as the FX3 remains available for purchase.
New Sensor and Processor Enhancements
The FX5 features a state-of-the-art 16.6MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor paired with the BIONZ XR2 processor, which incorporates AI technology for enhanced performance. This configuration allows the camera to capture stunning video quality, including 5K at 60 frames per second (fps) and 4K at 120 fps, with potential future upgrades enabling even higher specifications.
Innovative Open Gate Recording
A standout feature of the FX5 is its open gate recording capability. This function utilizes the entire sensor's dimensions to produce 3:2 video, maximizing the pixel utilization for various formats, particularly advantageous for vertical crops. Advanced RAW Recording Options
The FX5 also supports 16-bit linear RAW recording internally, eliminating the need for external recorders. With three base ISO settings—ISO 800, ISO 4000, and ISO 12800—the FX5 excels in low-light environments, reportedly delivering over 15 stops of dynamic range.
Additionally, the camera incorporates AI-powered human pose estimation for improved autofocus performance, alongside an Auto Tracing White Balance feature that utilizes both visible and infrared sensor data. Users can also disable in-camera noise reduction and benefit from a de-squeeze function for anamorphic lenses, although this will disable autofocus.
User-Friendly Design and Accessories
The FX5 boasts a larger 3.5-inch touchscreen with 2.76 million dots, offering full articulation for versatile shooting angles. It is equipped with a built-in cooling fan and a larger NP-SA100 battery, alongside dual USB ports for power and data, as well as a wired LAN port for connectivity. The revamped menu system draws inspiration from Sony's CineAlta cameras, providing an intuitive user experience.
While the FX5 does not come with a built-in viewfinder, Sony has announced a new detachable viewfinder, the DVF-EL1, specifically designed for this model. Additionally, an XLR-H2 handle will also be available, enhancing the camera's usability.
The pricing for the FX5 starts at $4,900 for the body alone, with a bundled price of $5,500 including the XLR-H2 handle. The camera is expected to be available for purchase by mid-August, making it an appealing option for filmmakers looking to upgrade their gear.
