WhatsApp is expanding its feature set by testing a new guest call functionality that lets users join calls without an account. This development follows last year’s introduction of guest chat, which enabled conversations between users and non-users.
New Guest Call Functionality
The guest call feature, currently under development, was first highlighted by WABetaInfo. Although it is not yet available for beta testing, this new option aims to enhance user experience by facilitating easier communication.
How It Works
With this feature, the host of a call can create a link from the Calls tab. They can select the type of call they wish to initiate and send this link to invite others. This allows invited participants to join the call using their browser without needing to download the WhatsApp app.
Security Measures in Place
Unlike participants who have a WhatsApp account, guests without an account cannot join the call automatically. Instead, the host must approve each guest's request before they can participate. WhatsApp ensures that the same security protocols used for standard calls are applied to guest calls. When a guest accesses the link through their browser, WhatsApp Web generates a unique identifier for that call session.
Privacy Protection
This unique identifier is crucial as it creates an encryption key that safeguards the privacy of the conversation. As reported by WABetaInfo, the contents of the call are encrypted by default, meaning that WhatsApp itself cannot access the information shared during the call.
The guest chat and guest call features share a similar technological foundation. Guest chat allows participants to read and reply to messages at different times, and conversations can continue for up to 10 days of inactivity. In contrast, guest calls operate in real-time, concluding as soon as the host decides to end the call.
Future Availability
Currently, the guest call feature is still in the development phase, with an official update expected to be announced soon. However, the timeline for when this feature will be available to users remains unclear.
