Apple has officially launched its Apple Upgrade program, allowing customers to rent a variety of devices, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches, on a monthly payment basis. This initiative was hinted at by media outlet Bloomberg in late June 2026, and it has now become a reality thanks to a collaboration with payment service Klarna.
Flexible Rental Options
The Apple Upgrade program offers a range of rental options starting at $17.99 per month for an iPhone, $11.99 for an Apple Watch, and the same amount for an iPad. Renting a Mac starts at $24.99 monthly. Customers can choose rental periods that range from 12 to 36 months, depending on the device.

The rental fees vary based on the specific model and contract length. For instance, the iPhone 17 Pro with 256 GB storage is priced at $31.99 per month for a 24-month contract or $45.99 for a 12-month agreement.
Post-Rental Options
Once the rental period concludes, customers have three choices: they can return the device and end the contract, upgrade to a newer model through a new contract, or pay off the remaining value to permanently own the device. If they opt to purchase, they will only need to pay the difference between the device's price and the total amount of rent already paid. Apple assures customers that there are no additional fees from Klarna, aside from applicable taxes.
Convenient Trade-In and Return Process
Apple also provides a prepaid shipping box for customers who wish to return or exchange their rented devices, similar to the current trade-in service. The Apple Upgrade program is accessible through the Apple online store, the Apple Store app, and physical Apple retail locations, although it is currently only available for users in the United States.
Additionally, a trade-in option is available that can reduce the monthly rental cost, as the value of the old device will be credited monthly. To qualify for the Apple Upgrade program, customers must activate their iPhone with a postpaid plan from AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile.
