Google Messages has gained popularity as a top messaging app for Android users, but it's not without its flaws. While the platform has introduced several commendable features like RCS and end-to-end encryption, not every addition has been welcomed.
User Poll Highlights Discontent
Recently, a poll conducted by Android Authority aimed to gauge user sentiment regarding the app's features, specifically focusing on those that users found least favorable. The poll garnered a notable 1,144 votes, and the results were quite revealing.
The Gemini Button Takes the Lead
Among the various features listed, the Gemini button emerged as the clear least favorite, receiving nearly 50% of the votes. A total of 556 respondents (48.6%) expressed their discontent with this feature, and their reasons are quite compelling.
The Gemini button, which hovers above the “Start a new chat” button, has been criticized for its placement. Users frequently tap it by mistake, leading to frustration. Additionally, its functionality is seen as redundant since Google already provides a dedicated Gemini app that offers more robust chatbot capabilities.
Users Seek Simplicity
While the Gemini button is intended to assist users in drafting messages or quick responses, many find it unnecessary for casual conversations with friends and family. Fortunately, users can easily disable the Gemini button by navigating to the app settings. By going to Message settings and toggling the Show Gemini button option off, users can reclaim valuable screen space.
The disdain for the Gemini button was far greater than for other features in Google Messages. Floating chat bubbles, which allow users to reply to messages without opening the app, received 205 votes (17.9%) as a less favorable feature. Follow-up reminders, designed to prompt users to respond to inactive threads, came in third with 154 votes (13.5%).
Profile sharing also drew criticism, with 124 voters (10.8%) identifying it as their least favorite feature. Many users prefer to keep their name and profile picture private, especially when communicating with casual contacts. Lastly, outgoing message sounds were the least disliked feature, attracting only 63 votes (5.5%).
Additional Feedback from Users
Interestingly, 42 respondents (3.7%) felt that their least favorite feature was not listed in the poll. Some users voiced concerns about the absence of message timestamps, while others questioned the functionality of the @mention feature. These insights highlight the diverse range of user experiences and preferences.
Although this poll reflects the opinions of a specific readership, the overwhelming response regarding the Gemini button speaks volumes about user preferences. Fortunately, Google is reportedly working on enhancing the placement of the Gemini button in future updates to make it less intrusive.
