Faker Takes on Role as Anti-Cyber Gambling Ambassador

Lee 'Faker' Sang-hyeok, a prominent figure in the esports community, has recently gained recognition beyond the competitive League of Legends scene. On July 22, 2026, the National Police Agency of South Korea appointed him as the Youth Cyber Gambling Awareness Ambassador and Honorary Police Officer.

Faker's New Role

This appointment is part of a national campaign aimed at reducing the rising trend of online gambling among teenagers. With his strong discipline, professionalism, and clean image built over more than a decade, Faker is seen as an ideal role model to engage with the younger generation.

Educational Campaign Initiatives

In his new capacity, Faker will be the face of the national educational campaign, which includes public service announcements, educational posters, and outreach activities highlighting the dangers of cyber gambling. Additionally, he will actively participate in recognizing teenagers who successfully complete rehabilitation programs.

Importance of Early Intervention

The campaign also promotes the Youth Cyber Gambling Voluntary Reporting System, a voluntary reporting initiative designed to help address addiction at an early stage. As of mid-July 2026, the system has received 806 voluntary reports from the community. Identifying teenagers involved in cyber gambling early is crucial, as they need immediate counseling and support to prevent worsening issues. Faker's influence is hoped to encourage more young individuals to seek help without hesitation.

Faker's Achievements

Feeling honored by his new responsibilities, Faker expressed a strong commitment to actively participate in various activities to raise awareness about the dangers of cyber gambling and the importance of voluntary reporting systems. This appointment adds to his list of prestigious accolades received throughout 2026. Previously, he was recognized as the first esports athlete to receive the highest sports award from the South Korean government.

In addition, Faker has been named the Game Ambassador for the Esports World Cup (EWC) and the Esports Nations Cup (ENC) through 2028, alongside global sports icons like Cristiano Ronaldo. As a further tribute, the Korea Post announced plans to release a special edition stamp featuring Faker in October 2026.

Despite T1's inability to secure a trophy at the 2026 Esports World Cup, Faker and his team are now focused on the prestigious League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) 2026, which will be held from October 15 to November 14, 2026, in the United States, starting from Los Angeles and concluding at the Barclays Center in New York.

With a remarkable record of five world championship titles, the Unkillable Demon King is prepared to lead T1 in its quest for international trophies. Faker now carries dual responsibilities: serving as a social education role model outside the arena while continuing to be a fierce competitor in the global esports landscape.
