Microsoft Explores Copilot as a New Operating System Concept

Microsoft has traditionally viewed Windows and Copilot as separate entities: an operating system (OS) and an AI assistant that operates on top of it. However, recent leaked footage reveals a bold experiment from the company that reimagines this relationship.

Introducing Project Aion

Known as Project Aion, this internal prototype aims to integrate Copilot directly into the Windows experience, eliminating the Start menu, Taskbar, and the conventional desktop interface that has persisted for over thirty years. The leaked video, which first appeared on Discord via BetaWiki, showcases a web-based operating system featuring what could be termed an agentic OS.

An Innovative User Experience

This experimental system runs on a completely new codebase for Windows, dubbed "Win3." It is designed as a lightweight, web-centric operating system, utilizing the Edge browser (along with the Chromium layout engine) as its primary shell to enhance the Copilot AI experience.

Key Features of Project Aion

Project Aion promises a significant transformation in how users interact with their PCs. Some of its main features include:

  • Deep integration of Copilot into the core system.
  • A streamlined interface without traditional desktop elements.
  • Web-based functionality designed for modern computing needs.

The Future of Project Aion

While many sources have confirmed the authenticity of the video, which dates back approximately two years, it remains uncertain whether Project Aion will evolve into a tangible product or if it was merely a fleeting internal experiment at Microsoft. Given its age, it is likely that the project has been shelved.

Even if Aion never emerges as a standalone operating system, this prototype clearly illustrates the extent to which Microsoft is willing to challenge the identity of Windows in pursuit of its AI ambitions.
