OpenAI has officially launched its first hardware product, the Codex Micro, after much anticipation and speculation. Contrary to earlier rumors suggesting the release of a smart pen or an AI gadget, this new device is a compact keyboard designed specifically to assist developers in coding.
Introducing Codex Micro
Developed in collaboration with Work Louder, known for creating programmable keyboards and macro pads, the Codex Micro is not your typical full-sized keyboard. Instead, it features a small box design tailored for use with ChatGPT Codex, OpenAI's coding assistant compatible with both Mac and Windows systems.
Features and Customization
OpenAI describes the Codex Micro as a "command center for agentic work," emphasizing its role in AI-driven tasks. The device includes 13 mechanical buttons, a touch sensor, a rotary dial, and a joystick, all of which can be customized according to user preferences. The joystick is particularly versatile, allowing users to perform various functions within Codex, such as planning, reviewing pull requests, debugging errors, and refactoring code.
Moreover, the mechanical buttons can be personalized with 32 keycaps featuring Codex icons that come included in the package. By default, these buttons are programmed to execute specific functions, enhancing the overall coding experience.
Task Management and Status Indicators
The Codex Micro also offers a pinned task list feature, enabling developers to seamlessly switch between ongoing projects and easily track which tasks still need attention. One unique aspect of this keyboard is its six status indicator lights, each capable of displaying the AI agent's status using different colors. For instance, a green light signifies unread messages, blue indicates the AI is processing a task, orange means the agent requires user approval or has questions, and red indicates an error.
Design and Availability
The rotary dial on the Codex Micro plays a crucial role in adjusting the reasoning level used by ChatGPT Codex for completing tasks. In terms of design, the keyboard combines a CNC-processed polycarbonate body with a sandblasted anodized aluminum base. It utilizes mechanical switches with customizable RGB lighting and connects via Bluetooth or USB-C.
The Codex Micro is now available for pre-order in the United States at a price of $230 (approximately IDR 4.1 million). Customers can choose between Clicky or Silent button variants, with the initial shipment scheduled to begin on July 24, 2026.
