Otto Toto Sugiri: Indonesia's Tech Billionaire and Innovator

Introduction to Otto Toto Sugiri

Otto Toto Sugiri has recently earned his spot among the top ten wealthiest individuals in Indonesia, as reported by Forbes on July 14, 2026. Frequently referred to as the 'Bill Gates of Indonesia,' Sugiri ranks seventh with a net worth of $8 billion (approximately IDR 144.5 trillion), placing him at position 460 on the global rich list.

Career Beginnings and Early Ventures

After obtaining a Master of Science in Engineering from RWTH Aachen University in Germany in 1980, Otto returned to Indonesia to embark on his entrepreneurial journey. His initial project involved creating local software, including programs for the oil industry and managing loan disbursements for fishermen in Papua. In 1983, he joined Bank Bali, where he developed accounting software that significantly improved banking operations.

Founding Sigma Cipta Caraka

By 1989, Otto co-founded Sigma Cipta Caraka with six former colleagues from Bank Bali, including Marina Budiman. With an initial investment of $200,000, the company thrived amid the deregulation of Indonesia's banking sector, which saw the number of banks surge from 120 to over 240. In 2008, Telkom Indonesia acquired Sigma Cipta Caraka for $35 million, and it is now known as Telkomsigma.

Indointernet: A Revolutionary ISP

One of Otto's most significant achievements was the establishment of Indointernet (Indonet) in 1994, alongside Marina Budiman. This company became Indonesia's first Internet Service Provider (ISP), allowing people in the country to access the internet for the first time. Indonet went public in 2021, and in 2023, Otto and other founders sold their shares to Singapore-based Digital Edge.

DCI Indonesia: A New Venture

After selling Sigma Cipta Caraka, Otto initially contemplated retirement. However, the Indonesian government's push for local data center utilization opened new avenues for him. In 2011, he co-founded PT DCI Indonesia (DCII) with associates like Marina Budiman and Han Arming Hanafia. Under Otto's leadership, DCII has become one of Indonesia's largest data center operators. In 2014, he achieved a major milestone by securing Tier IV certification for DCII, making it the first Tier IV data center in Southeast Asia, with key locations in Cibitung, Karawang, and Jakarta.
