Valorant EWC 2026: Paper Rex and RRQ Face Early Defeats

The opening matches of the Valorant Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026 did not go as planned for the two representatives from the VCT Pacific region. Paper Rex (PRX) fell to NRG with a score of 1-2, while Rex Regum Qeon (RRQ) suffered a 0-2 defeat against 100 Thieves (100T).

Following these losses, Paper Rex was pushed into the lower bracket, where they now face elimination against Karmine Corp (KC). Meanwhile, NRG advanced to the upper bracket of Group B, set to compete against Team Vitality. In Group A, 100 Thieves secured a convincing victory over RRQ, who fielded a new lineup without their player Monyet.

RRQ's New Roster in Action

The match against 100 Thieves marked RRQ's debut with their revamped roster, featuring Xan in place of Monyet. The 19-year-old player took on a crucial role, utilizing agents Neon and Omen.

In the Ascent map, RRQ attempted a fresh strategy with a double Sentinel composition, relying on Vyse and Sage. In contrast, 100 Thieves deployed a composition centered around Cypher, supported by Jett and Phoenix.

100 Thieves’ strategy proved to be more effective. They closed the first half with a solid 8-4 lead while defending, and maintained their consistency in the attacking phase, ultimately winning the match 13-10 and securing a 2-0 victory.

Paper Rex's Strong Start Against NRG

Contrary to RRQ, Paper Rex began their match against NRG with promising momentum. Competing on the Fracture map, PRX relied on their double Initiator composition that had worked well for them this season. NRG countered with a lineup featuring Phoenix and Waylay.

Paper Rex showcased their strength right from the start, claiming seven first bloods compared to NRG's five, allowing them to finish the first half leading 7-5.

As they transitioned to the attack, Paper Rex quickly secured four consecutive rounds, ultimately taking the first map and leading the series 1-0.

NRG's Comeback and Dominance

The dynamics shifted dramatically on the second map, Lotus. Despite a momentary setback due to a thrifty round won by Paper Rex, NRG rebounded, securing seven rounds during their attack. Upon switching sides, their defense was disciplined, effectively limiting PRX's movements.

NRG claimed a decisive 13-5 victory, forcing the match to the decisive third map, Breeze.

In the final map, NRG's player, Keiko, was instrumental in their performance. Utilizing Jett, he was aggressive, winning five out of eight opening duels. His performance created significant space for NRG, who ended the first half ahead by 8-4.

Although Paper Rex narrowed the gap by winning the pistol round in the second half, NRG quickly countered, maintaining their gameplay momentum. After trading rounds, NRG secured a 13-10 victory, concluding the series at 2-1.

Next Steps for Paper Rex and RRQ

NRG will next face Team Vitality in the upper bracket of Group B, marking their first official match against each other. Meanwhile, Paper Rex is under pressure as they prepare for a do-or-die match against Karmine Corp in the lower bracket. This matchup also represents the first meeting between these two teams since last year's edition of the event.

For RRQ, the defeat to 100 Thieves highlights significant challenges ahead for their new roster. While Xan has introduced a fresh perspective to the team's gameplay, RRQ must enhance their coordination and strategic execution if they hope to continue their journey in the Valorant EWC 2026.
